The pitch is tempting when money is tight: a loan in ten minutes, no salary slip, no credit score needed, just download the app. For many people, what follows is a small amount credited after heavy "processing fees", a repayment demand within a week at an enormous interest rate, and then relentless calls. Some borrowers find their contacts receiving abusive messages, or their photos edited into humiliating images and shared.

These operations are not ordinary lenders. Many of them are illegal, and the harassment they use is a crime. If you are caught up in this, you are not alone, and there are real steps you can take.

How legitimate digital lending works

In India, lending is a regulated activity. Loans must come from a bank or a lending institution regulated by the Reserve Bank of India, such as a registered non-banking financial company (NBFC). A loan app may be run by that lender itself or by a partner working on its behalf, but either way a regulated entity must stand behind the loan.

Under the RBI's rules for digital lending, a genuine lender should:

  • Clearly tell you the name of the regulated bank or NBFC that is giving the loan.
  • Share a key fact statement showing the loan amount, all fees and the annual percentage rate before you sign.
  • Send the loan amount directly to your bank account and take repayments directly, not through someone's personal account.
  • Collect only the data it needs, with your consent, and not help itself to your contacts, photos and files.
  • Offer a grievance officer and a way to complain.

If an app cannot tell you which regulated lender is behind it, that is a serious red flag.

Warning signs of an illegal loan app

  • It promises a loan with no documents, no checks and no questions at all.
  • It asks for access to your contacts, gallery, messages or location before approving anything.
  • It deducts a large "processing" or "GST" fee so that you receive far less than the loan amount.
  • The repayment period is very short, often seven days, with daily penalties.
  • There is no clear company name, registered address or regulated lender mentioned.
  • It is promoted mainly through social media ads, messaging groups or a link to download an APK file outside the app store.
  • Repayment is demanded through UPI to a personal ID or a different account each time.

Before you borrow from any app

Check the lender's name on the Reserve Bank of India's website, which lists registered NBFCs, and see whether the app appears in the RBI's published information on digital lending apps linked to regulated entities. Read the app's reviews carefully, looking for mentions of harassment. Most of all, compare the total amount you will repay with what you actually receive. If a short, small loan costs a large share of its value in fees, walk away.

If you need money urgently, it is worth first asking your own bank about a small personal loan or an overdraft, or speaking to a trusted person. The slower route is almost always cheaper and safer.

If you are being harassed

Recovery agents are not allowed to threaten, abuse or shame borrowers, contact people in your phonebook to humiliate you, or call at unreasonable hours. Morphing photos and threatening to publish them are criminal offences. Here is what to do.

  • Do not panic, and do not make payments to new accounts under pressure. Paying rarely stops illegal operators; it often leads to fresh demands.
  • Save everything: screenshots of messages, call logs, numbers, UPI IDs, the app's name and any loan documents.
  • Report the harassment on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in, or call the helpline 1930 if money has been taken fraudulently.
  • Go to your nearest police station or cyber cell with your evidence and file a complaint.
  • If the lender is a regulated bank or NBFC, complain to it first, and escalate to the RBI's complaint management system if you do not get a response. The RBI's Sachet portal can be used to report entities that lend or collect money without authorisation.
  • Uninstall the app, then revoke any permissions it was given and change passwords on important accounts.
  • Tell your close family and friends what is happening, and ask them to ignore or report any messages about you.

Protecting your mental health

People targeted by these apps often feel deep shame and fear, and some have been pushed to despair. It is important to remember that you are the victim of a crime, not the wrongdoer. Talk to someone you trust. If the stress feels overwhelming, reach out to a counsellor or a mental health helpline such as the government's Tele-MANAS service on 14416, which offers free support.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still have to repay a loan from an illegal app?

This depends on the situation and is best discussed with a lawyer or legal aid service. What is clear is that harassment, threats and misuse of your data are not allowed in any circumstances, and you should report them regardless of what you owe.

Will the app really send my photos to my contacts?

Some illegal operators do carry out their threats, which is why it helps to warn your contacts in advance and report the matter quickly. Once police are involved and your contacts know the truth, the threat loses most of its power.

How do I know if a loan app is RBI approved?

The RBI does not approve apps as such; it regulates the lenders behind them. Find the name of the bank or NBFC the app says it works with, check it on the RBI website, and make sure the app itself names that lender clearly.

A slower loan is a safer loan

Easy money in minutes usually has a hidden price. Before tapping "apply", find out who is really lending, what it will cost in total and what access the app wants to your phone. And if you are already trapped, remember that help exists and reporting is your right.
