Ration Card e-KYC Deadline: What the Rules Actually Say, the Karnataka Extension and the Fake-Link Scam to Avoid
Searches for 'ration card e-KYC last date' have surged after Karnataka extended its deadline to 20 October. There is no single national deadline, your card is not automatically cancelled, and the SMS links doing the rounds are fraud. Here is how to complete e-KYC safely.

Few searches cause more worry than "ration card e-KYC last date". The query has climbed sharply this week after Karnataka pushed its deadline from 30 September to 20 October 2026, and because messages warning that cards will be "cancelled from 1 October" are spreading on WhatsApp. Some of that is confusion between states; some of it is outright fraud. This guide separates the two.
What ration card e-KYC is
e-KYC links every member listed on a ration card to their Aadhaar through biometric or face authentication. The Department of Food and Public Distribution wants it done so that subsidised grain under the National Food Security Act reaches the right people and duplicate or ghost beneficiaries are removed. It is a one-time verification per member, not a renewal you repeat every year.
Is there a national deadline?
No. The central department has not notified a single all-India last date. States run their own e-KYC drives and announce their own cut-offs, extend them when needed, and decide how to treat cards where members have not verified. That is why a deadline you see in one state's news does not apply to you if you live in another.
If you are unsure what your state's position is, check the state food and civil supplies department website or ask at your fair price shop. Do not rely on a forwarded message.
The Karnataka extension
Karnataka had fixed 30 September 2026 as the final date for e-KYC of APL and BPL ration cards. In the last week of September, ration shops saw severe crowding and the verification servers repeatedly went down, leaving over a crore cards still unverified. The state government extended the deadline to 20 October 2026. Officials have said the exercise at ration shops is free and that beneficiaries should not pay anyone to complete it.
Will my ration stop if I miss the date?
Not automatically, and not nationally. Under the NFSA framework, a state can suspend or remove names that remain unverified after its own notified process, but the rule most people are seeing in forwards, that any card unused for six months is deactivated from 1 October, is a mix of a general dormancy rule in some states and a date that does not apply everywhere. If your card is marked inactive, you can get it restored by completing e-KYC and applying at the local office. It is an inconvenience, not a permanent loss of entitlement.
How to complete e-KYC
- At the fair price shop: carry your ration card and Aadhaar for each member. The dealer uses the ePoS machine for fingerprint or face authentication. This is free.
- Through the official app: the central Mera eKYC app, together with the AadhaarFaceRD app, allows face authentication from a phone in states that have enabled it. Download only from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and check the publisher is the government.
- Through the state portal: several states let you check e-KYC status by entering your ration card number. Use the official state domain, which ends in gov.in or nic.in.
- Members living elsewhere: under One Nation One Ration Card, a family member can complete e-KYC at any fair price shop in the country.
The fake-link scam
Fraudsters are sending SMS and WhatsApp messages saying your ration card will be cancelled unless you "complete e-KYC" through a link. The link opens a page that looks official and asks for Aadhaar, OTP or bank details, or installs an app that takes over the phone. Police in several states have issued warnings this week.
- No government department sends e-KYC links by SMS or WhatsApp.
- e-KYC never requires an OTP from your bank or a payment.
- Official sites end in gov.in or nic.in. Anything else is suspect.
- If you clicked and entered details, call 1930, the national cyber crime helpline, and report at cybercrime.gov.in. Our guide to reporting cyber crime walks through the steps.
