Google has spent a year hinting that Android was coming to laptops. This week it arrived. The first Googlebooks reached shops in the United States on 4 October and in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia on 5 October. "What is a Googlebook" has been a rising search in India since the pre-order date, even though there is no Indian launch yet.
What a Googlebook is
A Googlebook is a laptop that runs Googlebook OS, a new desktop operating system built on Android rather than on ChromeOS. Google announced the platform on 12 May 2026 as the successor to the Chromebook. Think of it as what happens when Android's app ecosystem, Google's Gemini assistant and ChromeOS's desktop ideas are combined into one system.
The launch models
Five laptops from five partners: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Prices run from $899 to $1,299, which is a step up from most Chromebooks and squarely in Windows ultraportable territory. Specifications differ by model, but all five are thin-and-light designs rather than budget machines.
What is different from a Chromebook
- Apps: Googlebook OS runs Android apps natively, with the Play Store as the primary app source, alongside web apps.
- Assistant: Gemini is built into the system, handling search, writing help and on-device tasks.
- Phone pairing: deep integration with Android phones, including shared notifications, messages and file handoff.
- Price: Chromebooks were built for schools and budgets; Googlebooks are positioned against MacBook Airs and premium Windows laptops.
What happens to Chromebooks
Google has described the Googlebook as the Chromebook's successor. Existing Chromebooks keep receiving updates through their stated support windows, and schools remain a Chromebook market for now. New premium Google laptops will be Googlebooks.
India
Google has not announced an Indian launch date or rupee pricing. Chromebooks took years to arrive here in volume, mostly through education. Given the $899 starting price, an Indian Googlebook would land around Rs 80,000 or more before taxes and local offers, which puts it against the MacBook Air. We will update this page when Google confirms.
