World Habitat Day 2026 and India's 70th Wildlife Week: The Adequate Housing for All Theme, Why Both Fall This Week and What They Ask Of Us

Two observances share the first week of October. World Habitat Day, today, 5 October, carries the theme Adequate Housing for All, with the global observance hosted in Muscat, Oman, from 5 to 8 October. India's Wildlife Week, in its 70th year, runs from 2 to 8 October under the theme Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife. What each marks, the figures behind them and how they are observed.

Two very different observances are competing for school noticeboards this week. World Habitat Day, about where people live, falls today. Wildlife Week, about where animals live, has been running since Friday. Both are trending in India for the usual early-October reason: students have been asked to write about them. Here is what each one is actually about.

World Habitat Day

The United Nations designated the first Monday of October as World Habitat Day in 1985, and the first observance was in 1986. Its purpose is to focus attention on the condition of towns and cities and on the right of everyone to adequate shelter. UN-Habitat, the UN's human settlements programme, coordinates it and picks a theme each year.

The 2026 theme is Adequate Housing for All. The figures behind it are stark: UN-Habitat estimates that about 1.1 billion people live in slums or informal settlements, and that the number could rise by two billion over the next 30 years without a change in policy. The global observance is hosted in Muscat, Oman, from 5 to 8 October, with the Habitat Scroll of Honour awards presented there.

In India the theme lands on familiar ground. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has sanctioned more than 1.2 crore urban houses since 2015, but rental affordability in big cities and the regularisation of informal settlements remain live issues.

India's Wildlife Week

Wildlife Week has been observed from 2 to 8 October every year since 1957, which makes 2026 the 70th edition. It was created by the Indian Board for Wildlife to raise awareness of conservation, and it opens on Gandhi Jayanti by design. State forest departments, zoos and the Wildlife Institute of India run the programme: nature walks, school quizzes, photography competitions and awareness drives in villages near protected areas.

The 2026 theme is Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife, pointing at corridors between protected areas, which have become the central idea in Indian conservation as tiger and elephant numbers grow and the animals move beyond reserve boundaries. India's tiger population was estimated at 3,682 in the last all-India count, about three quarters of the world's wild tigers.

How they are observed

  • Schools: essays, posters and quizzes on both themes; many ask students to pick one.
  • Municipal bodies: housing-scheme camps and slum-upgrading announcements timed for World Habitat Day.
  • Forest departments: open days at sanctuaries, often with reduced entry fees for students during Wildlife Week.
