The Lost Art of Hair Oiling — Grandma Was Right All Along

There was a time when Saturday in every Indian home was 'oiling day'. Mother would sit with her daughter's hair tied back, warm oil would be massaged in, conversations would flow, and there was a strange kind of peace. Then modern hair care arrived — dry shampoos, heat protectants, chemical treatments — and that tradition was left behind. But science is now coming back to confirm: grandmothers were right.

Why Oiling Is Essential for Hair — From a Scientific Perspective

The hair shaft is a protein structure — keratin. Its outer layer is called the cuticle. A healthy cuticle is flat and tight, making hair look shiny and smooth. Damage, heat, and chemicals cause the cuticle to lift — hair becomes dull, frizzy, and brittle. Hair oil seals the cuticle, locks in moisture, and reduces protein loss.

Oiling is also crucial for the scalp. The scalp is a skin — it needs hydration and nourishment. A dry scalp leads to dandruff, weakens hair follicles, and increases hair fall. Warm oil massage improves blood circulation in the scalp, providing more nutrients to follicles.

Which Oil — For Whom

Coconut oil: The most effective hair oil. It contains lauric acid which penetrates inside the hair shaft — most oils only stay on the surface. Reduces protein loss, controls frizz, and fights dandruff. For all hair types — fine, thick, straight, curly.

Almond oil: Rich in Vitamin E and fatty acids. Deeply nourishes the scalp, reduces breakage, and makes hair soft and shiny. Excellent for dry and damaged hair.

Amla oil: A powerhouse of Vitamin C. Slows premature greying, balances the scalp's pH, and promotes hair growth. One of the most revered oils in traditional Indian hair care.

Sesame oil: Has warming properties. Ideal for winters. Deeply conditions the scalp, darkens grey hair, and makes hair thick. Considered Vata-pacifying in Ayurveda.

"70% of patients who come to me with hair fall have this shared history — they stopped oiling, increased shampooing, and started heat styling. The correlation is direct."

How to Apply Oil the Right Way

Step 1: Warm the oil. Cold oil is not as effective. Put some oil in a bowl and warm it by placing it in a bowl of hot water (not the microwave — overheating destroys nutrients).

Step 2: Divide into sections. Divide the hair into 4-6 sections and systematically apply oil to the scalp section by section. Massage with fingertips in circular motions — at least 5-10 minutes.

Step 3: Apply to the lengths. Apply the remaining oil to the hair lengths and ends — the ends are the most damaged part.

Step 4: Give it time. Minimum 2 hours, ideally overnight. Tie hair in a loose bun or braid. A hot towel wrap is even more effective — it helps the scalp absorb the oil.

Washing — As Important as Applying

Properly removing the oil is equally important. Mix shampoo directly into the oiled hair before adding water — this reduces build-up. Shampoo twice. First to remove the oil, second for a thorough cleanse. Use cold or lukewarm water — hot water further damages the cuticle.

How Often to Oil

Ideal: 1-2 times a week. If the scalp is very oily, once a week. Twice for a dry scalp. Daily oiling is not needed — over-oiling can cause dandruff and build-up. Quality over quantity — more is not better, the right method is better.

And do not think of this ritual as just a beauty practice. When you give yourself or someone an oil massage, oxytocin is released — the bonding and relaxation hormone. The peace that came from a champi by grandmother's hands was also chemistry. Bring this back into your life.
