Complete Skincare Routine for the Desi Glow — Made for Indian Skin, with Indian Ingredients

Watching Korean skincare routines and Western 12-step regimens on Instagram, we wonder — should we be doing the same for our skin? But the reality is that Indian skin is unique. Our climate is different, our skin undertones are different, and we have a 5,000-year-old Ayurvedic beauty tradition that genuinely works. The ingredients in our kitchen — haldi, neem, chandan, ashwagandha — are the same ones the world's best skincare companies are now putting in their products.

This routine is specifically for Indian skin — for those with normal to oily skin tones, for those living in the Indian climate, and for those who want natural and affordable solutions.

Morning Routine — The Start of the Desi Glow

Step 1: Lukewarm water rinse. In the morning, rinse your face with only lukewarm water — no cleanser needed. You cleansed at night; using cleanser again immediately in the morning strips natural oils. Lukewarm water keeps pores clean without drying the skin.

Step 2: Rose water toner. Apply pure rose water on a cotton pad and gently wipe the face. It maintains pH balance, provides slight hydration, and preps the skin. Rose water is a staple of Indian beauty — very affordable and very effective.

Step 3: Aloe Vera Gel — Indian Skin's Best Friend

Fresh aloe vera gel — from a pot or the market — apply a light layer on the face. Aloe vera is perfect for Indian humidity — it provides hydration without being heavy. For acne-prone skin, aloe vera is anti-inflammatory. It has a gentle lightening effect on dark spots. Daily use is safe.

If fresh aloe vera is not available, pure aloe vera gel is readily available in the market. Check that it is pure aloe vera with no added alcohols or parabens. It makes an excellent base for your daily moisturiser.

Step 4: Sunscreen — No Excuses

Indian skin and sunscreen — this has been a love-hate relationship. But the truth is that sunscreen is the most important step for Indian skin. Hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone — all of these come from sun damage. UV radiation in India is high year-round.

SPF 30 minimum, SPF 50 preferred. Check the PA+++ rating too — this is UVA protection that causes aging and pigmentation. Tinted sunscreens for Indian skin tones are now easily available — they do not leave a white cast that makes darker skin tones look ghostly.

A dermatologist's advice

"If you could only choose one skincare step for Indian skin, it would be sunscreen. The glow will not come from any serum — it will come from consistent sun protection. It will keep you looking young ten years from now too."

Evening Routine — Repair and Nourish

Step 5: Oil cleansing. Oil cleansing is best for removing makeup or sunscreen in the evening. Coconut oil or castor oil mixed with coconut oil — massage onto the face, then wipe off with a warm wet cloth. This does not dry the skin and provides thorough cleansing.

Step 6: Haldi + milk face wash. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric with two tablespoons of milk to form a paste. Gently scrub the face and wash off. Turmeric is antibacterial and brightening; milk contains lactic acid that removes dead skin cells. This is desi exfoliation — two to three times a week.

Steps 7–8: Night Treatment

Step 7: Vitamin C serum for dark spots. Dark spots and hyperpigmentation are very common in Indian skin. Vitamin C serum is the most effective treatment. Amla oil or rosehip oil are natural sources of vitamin C. Good Indian-made vitamin C serums are available at reasonable prices.

Step 8: Night moisturiser — the desi option. Kumkumadi oil (traditional Ayurvedic face oil) has been used in India for centuries. A blend of saffron, sandalwood, and other herbs — it nourishes the skin, improves texture, and gives a glow. Two to three drops at night — this is the most luxurious and effective Indian night treatment.

Weekly Treatments — Desi Glow Secret Weapons

Ubtan — the traditional Indian bridal beauty secret. Besan + haldi + chandan powder + milk + rose water — make a paste and apply on the face and body. Leave for twenty minutes, let it dry, and wash off with circular rubbing motions. This provides deep cleansing, mild exfoliation, and natural glow — all in one step.

Multani mitti face pack — the Indian version of a clay mask. It absorbs excess oil and tightens pores. Perfect for oily skin. Mix with rose water — wash off before it dries completely so the skin does not become overly dry. Those who follow this routine have consistently reported skin improvement within four to six weeks.
